‘Why does my body do this to me?’

Your nervous system has a lot to say to you! Most of the time, it speaks to you through your body via sensations, body feelings/ states and sensory messaging. It’s like getting texts all the time but from your body. Are you listening?

It might be saying: “I remember when you never felt safe and always had to scan the room for danger” or “I remember when you had to hold your breath and keep still so the shouting adults didn’t notice you were there’ or ‘I remember when you needed to look after everyone because the adults weren’t there or able to care for you.’

How are you going to reply?

Trigger is a word used a lot these days but it’s just another word for body memory. On this 5-week Trauma Toolkit workshop series, I hope you’ll join us to explore the different ways the impact of your past shows up here and now in your body and how you might start to chat with it.

You’ve survived this far but sometimes it feels like it’s still happening to you and your body’s sending survival messages out of the blue for no apparent reason, or all day (and night) – things like hypervigilance, numbness, restlessness, anxiety, depression, flashbacks, nightmares.

On this 5-week course we’ll be curious about these normal consequences to surviving traumas and explore how to use your senses to move through them and befriend your body again. We’ll learn about how your brain works, nervous system health, try lots of different grounding techniques and coping strategies, look at some of your behaviours and make plans to put down boundaries or let people know what our needs are. There will be things to practice between sessions, if you’re interested.

The goal of the Trauma Toolkit workshops is not to feel calm all the time or symptom-free but to tolerate the impact of trauma in our lives and gain understanding and resilience.

Trauma is not what happened to us, so we won’t be sharing stories or histories. Trauma is how the impact of what happened to us feels now and how we can be with that in ways that doesn’t hold us back.

We need this because sometimes we are alone with these body-memories, and we need to know we can tolerate them.
We need this because for many of us it’s not the right time or place to open up stories and talk about trauma.
We need this because our bodies are intelligent and care deeply about us.
We need this because it’s our bodies that are shouting loudest in the room and it’s time to listen.

This is open to anyone who feels they’d like to learn more about the impact of trauma. Feel free to get in contact and make an enquiry. There will be a brief screening on registration to check this is the right thing for you right now.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Meriel.
