Safety and stabilisation.

Before addressing trauma, individuals need to establish a secure base. This stage focuses on reducing self-destructive habits, managing intense emotional responses, and developing coping strategies for flashbacks or dissociation. The aim is to help individuals regain control of their body and everyday life. For example, this may include learning grounding techniques, creating a safety plan, developing a daily routine, practising breathing exercises, and identifying trusted people or services to contact during distress.
